Historic Black Towns And Settlements Alliance
Known in various areas as "freemen towns", "freedom towns", or "All-Black towns", they are municipalities which were established by and/or for a predominantly African-American populace. From the 1800's into the 20th century, throughout the United States, more than 1,200 Black settlements and towns were created.
Although rarely acknowledged for their historic significance, several of these places settled by people of African descent remain in existence today and are thriving communities. Many of these are recognized heritage sites promoting education and cultural tourism.
